Whatsapp adds Kiswahili to language options

Messaging social networks WhatsApp has started using Kiswahili in its operation, The Citizen reported. The language already has more than 200 million speakers in Eastern Africa and elsewhere. The service is available in every country where Kiswahili is spoken, such as Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and DRC.

To access the service, users should go to Whatsapp Settings, then Chats, where they will find App Language, at which point they can choose Kiswahili and the user interface changes to the new language.

Facebook started using Kiswahili in 2005 while Twitter started in 2016, after users from Kenya petitioned Jack Dorsey to make the network use Kiswahili as an official language for translating tweets from different users. Google also added Tanzanian ethnic languages to its networks, such as Chaga, Hehe, Nyakyusa, Makonde and many others.

WhatsApp introduces encryption option for chat backups

WhatsApp has added encryption for chat backups. The optional layer of extra security is available for backups stored on Google Drive or iCloud. The company introduced default end-to-end encryption for chat messages five years ago. The encrypted backup can be secured with either a password or 64-digit encryption key. The backups will then become inaccessible to both WhatsApp or the backup service provider.

Mozilla Common Voice adds 16 new languages, 4,600 new hours of speech

The Mozilla Common Voice initiative released a new, expanded data set featuring 16 new languages — such as Basaa and Kazakh — and 4,622 new hours of speech. Mozilla Common Voice is an open-source initiative to make voice technology more inclusive. Contributors donate speech data to a public dataset, which anyone can then use to train voice-enabled technology.

Google launches AI-based feature for identifying songs using humming

Google said in a blog post that it has launched a new AI-based feature that lets people identify songs by humming them. The new feature uses machine learning models that can match people's hum, whistle or singing to the right song's melody, Google said. This builds on the work of Google's AI Research team's music recognition technology.

Facebook expands African language coverage for fact-checking scheme

Facebook has announced support for several African languages under its Third-Party Fact-Checking programme. The scheme was launch in 2018 in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal and Cameroon in partnership with independent company Africa Check. It will expand its local language coverage in Nigeria to Yoruba and Igbo, adding to Hausa, which was already supported. It will now include Swahili in Kenya, Wolof in Senegal and Afrikaans, Zulu, Setswana, Sotho, Northern Sotho and Southern Ndebele in South Africa.

BBC launches Igbo, Yoruba language services in Nigeria

The BBC has launched its new Igbo and Yoruba services in Nigeria, as part of an expansion in local languages aimed at more in-depth reporting of countries around the world. The digital-only services went live online and on social media on 19 February, joining a platform for Pidgin speakers that was launched last year and has attracted widespread interest. All three are among twelve new language services set up across the world with the help of GBP 291 million UK government funding.
