WhatsApp claims more users than Twitter

WhatsApp founder Jan Koum announced at AllThingsDigital's D: Dive Into Mobile event that the free SMS and instant messaging app now has more monthly active users than Twitter. Twitter claims to have over 200 million active users. WhatsApp processes up to 20 billion messages a day. WhatsApp charges USD 0.99 a year subscription, rather than carrying advertising. Koum said that it a world with billions of phones it will be extremely easy to monetise, but more people need to join the smartphone revolution and "a lot more people need to buy more goods on their phones".
