WhatsApp, Google, others oppose GCHQ proposal for tapping encrypted chats

Companies including Apple, Google and WhatsApp have come out against a proposal from the UK security agency GCHQ to enable eavesdropping on encrypted chat services. The open letter signed by more than 50 companies, civil society organisations and security experts called on GCHQ to abandon its so-called "ghost protocol", and instead focus on "protecting privacy rights, cybersecurity, public confidence, and transparency", the Guardian reports.
