WhatsApp reaches 800 mln active users
Mobile messaging app WhatsApp has reached over 800 million monthly active users, its CEO Jan Koum announced on Facebook. That compares to 700 million reported in January and 600 million last August. WhatsApp was acquired by Facebook in October 2014.

Calling over messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger is increasingly popular in the Netherlands, with as much as 12 percent of all calls going over the apps, according to a survey by Multiscope among around 1,400 Dutch consumers. One in five smartphone users uses the apps regularly over a data connection, and half of all smartphones users have used the apps to make calls at least once. Especially women (54%) and 18-35 year-olds (66%) call regularly over IP apps or have tried the call features

Facebook Q1 profit sinks amid 42% higher revenues

Facebook said first quarter revenues advanced 42 percent year-on-year to USD 3.54 billion. Excluding forex effects, revenues lifted 49 percent. Revenue from advertising rose 46 percent to USD 3.32 billion, with mobile advertising revenue making up 73 percent, up from 59 percent the year earlier. Revenue from payments and other fees revenue declined 5 percent to USD 226 million. The operating profit fell 13 percent to USD 933 million. The net profit also fell, down 20 percent from the year earlier to USD 512

WhatsApp telt wereldwijd 800 miljoen maandelijkse actieve gebruikers (MAU). Dat maakte oprichter van de mobile messagingdienst Jan Koum dit weekend bekend via Facebook. Begin januari werd nog de mijlpaal van 700 miljoen MAU's behaald. Ten opzichte van een jaar geleden groeide het aantal MAU's zo'n 60 procent. WhatsApp werd in 2009 opgericht en groeide binnen korte tijd uit tot één van de grootste diensten voor het versturen van mobiele berichten via een internetverbinding. WhatsApp adds voice calls to Android app

WhatsApp has started activating voice calls for customers using its Android app. The free service to call other Whatsapp users requires an internet connection. On the launch page of the app, a new tab for calls has appeared. The company expects to roll out the feature to iOS users in the coming weeks.

Recent reports have suggested WhatsApp has started testing the new service WhatsApp Voice with a selected group of users. A launch was expected in Q1, but it's not yet clear whether the commercial start of the service will occur before the end of March.

WhatsApp launches web version

Instant messaging service WhatsApp has launched a web version of its mobile app. The browser version is available at web.whatsapp.com. Initially, the browser version works only with Google Chrome. More browsers will be added later, the company said. Users of Android, Windows Phone and Blackberry devices can pair their mobile version of WhatsApp to the web service. They need to first update to the latest version and scan a QR code with the app. The browser version of WhatsApp is not yet available for iPhone

WhatsApp active users pass 700 mln

WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum announced that the service now had more than 700 million monthly active users, with users sending over 30 billion messages per day. The CEO made the statement on his Facebook page. The company last reported 600 million users in late August 2014.

Facebook lifts mobile to 66% of ad revenues

Facebook again recorded double-digit growth in the third quarter, with revenues rising 59 percent year-on-year to USD 3.20 billion. The number of daily active users on the social network was up 19 percent to 864 million, and monthly users increased 14 percent to 1.35 million. 8.7 million Dutch have WhatsApp installed

Over 8.73 million Dutch had the messaging app WhatsApp installed on their smartphones in September 2014, over 1 million more installs than one year ago. The number of downloads of Facebook Messenger more than doubled during this period. In September 2013 over 1.72 million smartphone users downloaded this messaging app, growing to 3.73 million twelve months later according to Telecompaper's quarterly Dutch Apps Market report.
