Italian operator Wind Tre has announced the completion of work to unify the mobile network infrastructure of Wind and 3 Italia in the northeastern city of Trieste. In a statement, the company said the newly-unified network provides numerous benefits customers in the form of improved performance, coverage, quality of service, speed of access and a better user experience. The operator claimed an up to 250 percent increase in 4G speeds and a further significant improvement in 4G and 3G coverage, above all in indoor environments.

The network consolidation process will continue throughout 2018 and will eventually involve some 21,000 sites all over Italy. Wind Tre said the integration is also nearing completion in other major Italian cities, including Rome, Milan, Agrigento, Ascoli Piceno, Bologna and Caserta.

The merger of Veon's Wind and CK Hutchison's 3 Italia, one of the largest in Italy since 2007, was first announced in August 2016, with the new company starting operations earlier this year. Wind Tre recently reported total revenues of EUR 4.63 billion in the 9 months to end-September, down 2.1 percent year on year, with the group’s total mobile customer base falling below the 30 million mark to 29.8 million.
