Italian operator Wind Tre is examining the possibility of creating a newco for its towers business, selling off its data centres and transferring staff to Milan, according to a reorganisation plan presented to trade unions and seen by news agency Radiocor. The company reportedly intends to set up a new unit called “Pisa” for the 7,000 towers it still owns following the merger of Vimpelcom's Wind with Hutchison's 3 Italia back in January 2017. It would then sell off 49 percent of the tower unit to raise funds while maintaining control, said the report.
Other actions outlined in the plan include selling off the company’s data centres, currently employing around 100 workers, and transferring around 150 people from Rome and Naples to its Milan office. The reorganisation plan has yet to be approved by Wind Tre's board, said the report, adding that the company does not intend to lay off workers.
News of Wind Tre's reorganisation plans come just a few days after Vodafone Italia announced that it had begun negotiations with trade unions on a possible 1,130 redundancies.
