Vodafone Italia may axe up to 1,130 jobs
Vodafone Italia announced that it has begun negotiations with trade unions on a possible 1,130 redundancies after presenting its latest business plan. In a statement, the operator said the aim of the talks would be to reach “a mutual commitment to identify sustainable solutions for the affected individuals and the company as soon as possible” and that the lay-offs would involve workers “in all company functions”. The figure is equivalent to 15 percent of Vodafone’s Italian workforce of around 7,000.

The company added that the industrial plan presented to unions showed how the structural transformation of the market and the “drastic fall in prices” due to extraordinary competitive pressures, especially in the mobile segment, have led to a sharp contraction of the entire telecommunications sector and required it to take action to guarantee future sustainability and a return to growth.

Vodafone Italia reported organic service revenues down 4.6 percent year on year to EUR 1.26 billion in its fiscal third quarter to end-December 2018, a slight improvement on declines of 6.3 percent and 6.5 percent in the previous two quarters. However, total mobile service revenues for the quarter fell 8.4 percent year on year to EUR 979 million compared to EUR 1.07 billion a year earlier, mainly due to a 122,000 decline in its prepaid customer base in Q3.
