Xiaomi buys patents from Nokia, agrees cross-licence

Nokia announced the sale of patents to Xiaomi as well as a cross-license deal with the Chinese smartphone maker. The multi-year patent agreement includes a cross license to each company's cellular standard essential patents. The company did not comment on the type of patents sold to Xiaomi or the financial details. 

The two also agreed a business collaboration. Nokia will provide network infrastructure equipment and work with Xiaomi on optical transport solutions for data centre interconnect, IP routing based on Nokia's new FP4 network processor, and a data centre fabric solution. In addition, the companies have agreed to explore opportunities for further cooperation, in areas such as Internet of Things, augmented and virtual reality, and artificial intelligence.

Xiaomi said the collaboration with Nokia will help it build large, high-performance networks and strength in software and services.

Nokia to book revenue in Q3 after LG patent ruling

The International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce has issued a decision regarding the patent arbitration between Nokia and LG Electronics. The decision, which settles royalty payment obligations for a Nokia smartphone patent license announced in June 2015, is binding. Nokia did not disclose any details about the award, but did say it expects to recognize revenue for the agreement in the third quarter of this year, including a non-recurring catch-up revenue. Xiaomi to grow international footprint with new USD 1 bln loan

Xiaomi has signed a three-year syndicated loan agreement worth USD 1 billion loan, with the aim of growing of international footprint and developing its offline sales presence, TechCrunch reported. The manufacturer is currently present in over 20 countries. It did not specify which new markets it was targeting but did reference a recent patent deal with Nokia that creates a "strong platform" for global expansion.

Xiaomi agrees patent, apps deal with Microsoft

Xiaomi has agreed to buy around 1,500 patents from Microsoft and start loading Microsoft Office and Skype on its Android smartphones and tablets. The companies' new collaboration also includes a cross-license and patent transfer agreement. Beginning in September, Xiaomi Android devices, including the Mi 5, Mi Max, Mi 4s, Redmi Note 3 and Redmi 3, will come pre-installed with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Skype applications. Qualcomm signs licensing deal with Xiaomi

Qualcomm has signed another licensing agreement in China, with the smartphone maker Xiaomi. They have entered into a new 3G and 4G China patent licence agreement.
