Xiaomi smartphone shipments jump 70% quarter-on-quarter

Xiaomi reports it has shipped a record 23.16 million phones in the last quarter, which represents an increase of 70 percent from the previous quarter, global head of sales Xiang Wang announced on Twitter.

While Xiaomi did not to provide a further breakdown of sales, the growth is likely to be driven by expansion in markets outside its home Chine, such as India and Russia. Xiaomi traditionally sold its products through online channels, but has recently expanded its retail network to open more physical shops.

"I told everyone at the start of the year that the most difficult times are behind us. I also set a humble revenue goal of CNY 100 billion for the year. I am now confident we can achieve this goal," said Lei Jun, Xiaomi's CEO, in a statement to employees reported by CNBC. He attributed the success partly to increasing investment in research and development and a comeback after supply issues last year.
