
Xiaomi has launched its new flagship smartphones, the Redmi 5 and 5 Plus. They come with screens of respectively 5.7 and 5.99 inches with an 18:9 display.
They will launch first in the company's home market China from 12 December, before rolling out to other global markets. The Redmi 5 is priced at CNY 799 for 2GB RAM/16GB storage variant or CNY 899 for 3GB RAM/32GB storage. The Redmi 5 Plus starts at CNY 999 for the model with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage costs CNY 1,299 for 4GB RAM and 64GB storage.
The Redmi 5 Plus offers a higher screen resolution, of 1080x2160 versus 720x1440 for the basic Redmi 5, and runs the faster Snapdragon 625 chip compared to the Snapdragon 450 for the Redmi 5. The phones come with the same 12-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel front camera as well as support for dual Sim and microSD cards. The Plus version has a 4,000 mAh battery, and the Redmi 5 comes with 3,300 mAh.
