Yahoo! updates mobile, tablet apps
Yahoo! has unveiled a range of new offerings for mobiles and tablets. The offering is led by the previously announced Livestand service. Available initially in the US for the Apple iPad, the service brings a variety of third-party content sources and Yahoo!'s own information services to develop a customised 'magazine' based on the user's interests. Livestand builds on the personalisation technology in Yahoo's C.O.R.E. (content optimization relevance engine) as well as Yahoo! Mojito, which automatically packages apps for multiple device formats, and Yahoo! Manhattan, which leverages the Yahoo! Cloud to distribute apps and content. Also available for iPad users is IntoNow, an app that identifies what people are watching on TV, whether live or recorded, and shows related content, recommendations and discussions with friends. Yahoo! acquired IntoNow earlier this year. For Android users, the company offers Yahoo! Weather with photos from the Flickr community's crowdsourcing project flickr.com/projectweather. The app is free on the Android Market in 35 languages and 63 countries. Yahoo! also announced a new version of the Yahoo! Mail app for the iPad, initially available in the US. On its main portal, the company is adding new social features. These include Conversations, which enables people to have small group conversations within Yahoo! News; Notifications, which inform people of activity on Yahoo! that interests them; and the Social Sentiment Slider, a news-driven social opinion poll that connects brands to the conversations that matter to people.
