Customers will be able to watch local sports on networks like Fox Sports Networks and Comcast SportsNet and receive local news on network affiliates in their area. In addition, they can add premium channels such as Showtime or Fox Soccer Plus for an additional charge, while YouTube Originals - the shows commissioned by YouTube - are included free.
YouTube TV also comes with a cloud DVR, with no storage limits. The cloud DVR can record an unlimited number of programmes at once, and each recording will be saved for nine months. The service works over any internet device—mobile, tablet or computer, iOS or Android—and can be streamed to a TV with a Google Chromecast.
Up to six accounts can be set up on each subscription, for personalised recommendations and DVR, and three streams can be watched at the same time. There is no commitment period for YouTube TV, and subscribers can cancel at any time.
The launch of YouTube TV follows YouTube's first subscription service, YouTube Red started in late 2015 for USD 9.99. This provides ad-free access to YouTube videos, as well as YouTube Originals. The move into live TV will see Google competing with a growing number of OTT services in the US, such as Sling TV, AT&T's DirecTV Now and Sony's Playstation Vue.
