T-Mobile added 19,000 broadband customers in the three months, equal to 3 percent growth on a quarterly basis for a total of 647,000 subscribers at the end of September. Its growth was entirely in the consumer market, with business customers estimated stable to slightly lower.
KPN stabilises base, Ziggo down for first time
KPN showed a different picture, with business broadband subscribers up by 8,000 while consumer customers fell by the same number. This left it with a stable total base of 3.146 million broadband subscribers, its first quarter to not lose customers since Q4 2018.
While T-Mobile is growing strongly and KPN is stabilising its business, market leader VodafoneZiggo lost broadband customers for the first time. The loss of 12,000 consumer subscribers was not offset by growth in the business market, leaving the company with a total broadband base down by 6,600 to 3.371 million subscribers at the end of September.
"VodafoneZiggo blamed market competition for the loss of customers, suggesting it may be starting to feel the pressure from T-Mobile’s aggressive offers and KPN’s fibre network expansion," said Kamiel Albrecht, Telecompaper senior analyst for the Dutch fixed market. "VodafoneZiggo and KPN also implemented their annual price increases in July, which may have pushed some customers sensitive to the uncertain economic outlook to cancel their contracts."
