Almost 30% of EU mobile users switch off phone when abroad
Almost 30 percent (28%) of EU mobile users switch off their mobile phones when they travel to another EU country and don't use the device, according to a survey by TNS for Eurobarometer in January. A quarter of respondents said they deactivate data roaming when traveling in the EU, 18 percent buy a special data roaming package and 16 percent connect to Wi-Fi hotspots. One in ten said they buy a Sim from a local provider in the country where they're traveling.

Austrians, the French and the Portuguese were the least likely to use their phones abroad, with 42, 41 and 40 percent respectively saying they switch them off. The Danes, Dutch and Swedes were the most likely to switch off data roaming (55, 43 and 56 percent respectively) and use Wi-Fi services (29, 37 and 39 percent). Special data roaming packages were most popular in Latvia and Cyprus, with 56 and 47 percent of respondents there who did not deactivate data roaming opting for a package from their operator. Data roaming packs were also used by 40 percent or more in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Poland and Slovakia.

Only 8 percent of mobile users said they make as many calls when roaming in the EU as they do at home, while 54 percent said they make fewer calls. Mobile users were slightly more likely to receive calls and SMS when roaming. A fifth said they send texts when roaming in the EU as much as they do at home, while 45 percent said they send fewer SMS.
