Amazon is looking into acquiring Sprint’s Boost Mobile, Reuters reported, citing sources close to the matter. Sprint has been told to sell the unit if it wants to get its merger with T-Mobile US approved. The sources said Amazon is mainly interested in the fact that any deal will allow the buyer of Boost Mobile to use the new T-Mobile new mobile network for at least six years. Amazon is also interested in linking spectrum to the deal, should it go through.
The sale of Boost could bring in USD 3 billion, potential bidders previously told Reuters. Other parties interested in the unit include Q Link Wireless, a private equity firm working with FreedomPop and the former owner of Boost Mobile.
In a separate piece, sources told Bloomberg that T-Mobile US and and Sprint are thinking of selling mobile spectrum, as another way to gain regulatory approval for their merger. The idea would be to divest spectrum back to the government, which could then use then use the assets to establish a fourth carrier.
