Apple becomes top smartphone vendor in Q4 - Gartner
Apple sold the most smartphones in the fourth quarter, for the first time since the same quarter of 2016, according to the latest study from Gartner. For the full year, the company passed Huawei to take second place after Samsung. Smartphone sales fell in Q4, by 5.4 percent year-on-year to 384.6 million, For 2020, they decreased 12.5 percent to 1.347 billion. Declines in Q4 were tempered by the sale of more 5G smartphones and lower-to-mid-tier smartphones, even as people remained cautious about spending amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Apple tops Q4

Apple sales were boosted by the launch of its 5G iPhone 12 series, with double-digit growth in the quarter.  Apple sales rose to 79.9 million, with its market share lifting to 20.8 percent from 17.1 percent. Samsung came next, with sales and market share sliding to 62.1 million from 70.4 million, and to 16.2 percent from 17.3 percent, respectively. Xiaomi saw its market share advance to 11.3 percent form 8.0 percent, with sales up at 43.4 million from 32.4 million. Oppo came next, raising its market share and sales to 8.9 percent from 7.5 percent, and to 34.4 million from 30.4 million. Huawei rounded out the top five, with its market share falling to 8.9 percent from 14.3 percent and sales going lower to 34.3 million from 58.3 million.

Samsung remains at the helm for 2020

Samsung kept the top spot for the full year, though its market share slid to 18.8 percent from 19.2 percent and sales went lower to 253.0 million from 296.2 million. Apple followed, lifting sales and its share of the market to 199.8 million from 193.4 million and to 14.8 percent form 12.6 percent. Huawei’s market share went lower to 13.5 percent form 15.6 million, with sales off at 182.6 million from 240.6 million. Xiaomi advanced its share to 10.8 percent from 8.2 percent, with sales rising to 145.8 million from 126.0 million. Oppo’s market share also went up, to 8.3 percent form 7.7 percent, though sales slipped to 111.7 million from 118.7 million.
