Apple plans 'Pro' iPhone models in September, more new hardware by year-end - report

Apple is planning a range of new hardware products before year-end in an attempt to kickstart its sales, Bloomberg reported citing people familiar with the matter. These include new 'Pro' models of the iPhone expected in September, as well as refreshed versions of the iPad Pro, an entry-level iPad with a larger screen, new versions of the Apple Watch, and a cheaper HomePod coming next year.

The 'Pro' iPhone models will be the successors to the iPhone XS and XS Max, and a replacement for the iPhone XR is also expected to launch in September. The main upgrade on the Pro iPhones is the camera, which will get a third, ultra-wide-angle sensor.

The sensors will capture three images simultaneously and use new AI software to automatically correct the combined photo if, for example, a person is accidentally cut out of the shot, the report said. Other camera improvements include higher resolution photos, support for photos in very low light and upgraded video recording capabilities, including editing options while shooting.

Similar to Samsung, Apple will also add reverse charging for its wireless headphones on the new iPhones. Other new features include a wider angle for facial recognition, improved water resistance, better Oled screens with the Haptic Touch system and upgraded processors. A 5G model is not expected until next year, the report said.

The 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros will get similar upgrades to the iPhones, gaining upgraded cameras and faster processors. The new low-end iPad’s screen will be 10.2 inches, meaning Apple will likely phase out the original 9.7-inch model.

The report claims the Apple Watch changes will be more minimal, focusing on the watchOS 6 software update, and new case finishes. New, more expensive AirPods are also expected by next year, and a cheaper HomePod should launch in 2020. The current USD 300 smart speaker hasn’t sold very well, and the new model is expected to have just two tweeters, down from seven in the current HomePod. the sources said.
