Apple trial forces Samsung to disclose US unit sales
The hearing of Apple and Samsung's patent dispute in the US has forced Samsung to disclose sales figures for its smartphones and tablets. These include the first details on unit shipments by Samsung in the US market. Court documents reported by All Things Digital show that, from June 2010 through June 2012, Samsung sold 21.25 million phones, generating USD 7.5 billion in revenue. In tablets, the company sold 1.4 million Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Tab 10.1 devices, producing USD 644 million in revenue.

In terms of individual phone models, the largest in units were the Galaxy Prevail with 2.25 million phones sold, the Epic 4G at 1.89 million and the Epic 4G Touch variant of the Galaxy S II, which sold 1.67 million units in the US. All told, Samsung sold 4.1 million Galaxy S II devices, which was offered in the US in four different models, depending on the operator.

The court documents also show Apple’s phone and tablet sales in the US. From 2007 through the second quarter of 2012, Apple sold a total of 85 million iPhones in the US, worth a total of USD 50 billion in revenue. From its 2010 launch, Apple sold 34 million iPads, generating USD 19 billion in revenue.

The companies' lawyers have tried to keep the information secret, but the data is needed to determine any damages awarded if evidence of patent infringement is found. A number of other companies have also petitioned the court to keep various information secret, including Ericsson, Intel, Research In Motion, Nokia and Microsoft. News agency Reuters filed an appeal, arguing that nearly all information should be made public.
