Bertelsmann CEO to take over as RTL CEO after Habets steps down

RTL announced its CEO Bert Habets is stepping down for personal reasons. Chairman Thomas Rabe will become CEO, and Martin Taylor, currently Vice Chairman of the croup, has been appointed as chairman.

Rabe is already CEO and chairman of RTL's controlling shareholder Bertelesmann since 2012. He said RTL Group will continue to focus on three priorities: further strengthening its core TV, audio and production business, building local video streaming champions, and growing its advertising technology business. He previously served as RTL CFO from 2000, joined the broadcaster's board in 2006 and became chairman in 2012. 

Habets has been with RTL for over 20 years. After leading its Dutch activities, he was named co-CEO of the group in April 2017. He became sole CEO from the start of 2018.

German media company Bertelsmann is considering selling its controlling 48 percent stake in French broadcasting group M6, Reuters reports. The company has already approached potential bidders including Vivendi and Altice Europe, the report added. M6, which is controlled by Bertelsmann through RTL Group, could fetch a valuation of EUR 3 billion.

German media company Bertelsmann has increased its stake in the private broadcaster RTL, said its CEO Thomas Rabe in an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. The company has been buying shares in RTL for few months now, but it does not plan a full takeover and delisting of the firm. RTL Group is and remains an independent company, Rabe said.

RTL shareholders withhold discharge for CEO after resignation

The annual shareholders meeting of RTL Group has withheld the discharge for CEO Bert Habets for 2018. This follows his unexpected resignation earlier this month for personal reasons. RTL said the decision by the AGM "is based on certain matters under review", but these are not expected to have a significant financial impact on the group.

The Telecompaper Global Consumer Media index ended week 14 up 3.2 percent, ahead of the S&P 500 index (+2.1%). Much of the performance was attributable to heavyweights Alphabet (+2.%) and Facebook (+5.4%). M&A and management changes brought about some large share price movements. Also, ahead of Walt Disney's investor day several companies announced new products and services, including Discovery, Facebook, Snap and Comcast.

RTL reaches 28.2% share in Q1 among viewers aged 14-59

The RTL channel itself recorded a monthly market share of 10.9 percent among viewers aged 14 to 59 years old, ahead of ZDF (8.2%), ARD (7.8%), Sat.1 (7.6%), ProSieben (7.4%), VOX (6.7%), Kabel 1 (5.2%) and RTL II (4.1%). Nitro had a 2.5 percent monthly market share, Super RTL 1.8 percent, RTLplus 1.5 percent and n-tv 0.9 percent.

RTL revenues up 2.1% in 2018, passes 1 mln paid streaming subscribers

RTL Group reported revenues of EUR 6.505 billion for 2018, up 2.1 percent and led by expansion online, at production unit Fremantle and at RTL Netherlands. Organic revenue growth was 2.8 percent, in line with the broadcaster's guidance. RTL said it increased the digital share of revenue to 15.1 percent from 13.0 percent in 2017 and plans to invest more in its streaming services in the coming years.

German broadcaster RTL Group said Thomas Huber is the new manager of the brand team Digital in the marketing division of the company, effective 11 March. The Digital team will be responsible for the interactive brands of RTL, including TVNOW and RTL.de.

RTL outlines plans to expand VoD business

European broadcaster RTL has reiterated plans to invest more in local VoD services. At its annual group Management Summit in Luxembourg, the company said it's building a common technology platform for its German, French and Dutch channels to offer VoD services. Germany's RTL Group is preparing to build up its own video-on-demand offerings to compete with streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, reported German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ). The RTL Group plans to "significantly" increase its investments in video-on-demand services and assume more risks over the next few years to become a mass provider of on-demand streaming products, the head of the RTL Group Bert Habets told FAZ in an interview.
