BT CEO warns that removing Huawei telecoms technology would take 7 years

BT Group CEP Philip Jansen has warned that removing Huawei technology from UK telecoms networks would take seven years, reports the Irish News.

He insisted that BT was taking precautionary steps not to deploy Huawei technology on sensitive parts of the network. The company has previously confirmed plans not to use Huawei for EE's core 5G network roll-out. However, he warned that Huawei had been used on UK infrastructure for several years and that it would take just as long to remove it.

Jansen insisted that Huawei would be unable to shut down the entire EE network, adding that EE has 19,00 radio transmission towers and that it would only be able to shut down one a time, which BT would notice 'pretty quickly'. His comments come after US officials, including President Trump, suggested that a UK ban on Huawei technology could help secure a post-Brexit UK-US trade agreement.
