BT Italia workers have announced a strike over the company’s plans to cut 202 jobs from its total workforce of 950. A joint press release from the Slc-cgil, Fistel-cisl and Uilcom-uil unions said a strike will be held by the entire workforce on 26 July after the parties failed to reach an agreement following meetings at the employment ministry. BT’s troubled Italian unit last month announced an industrial plan to improve efficiency and identify new growth areas around 8 months after the parent company first revealed financial irregularities at BT Italia. The accounting scandal saw the company’s shares plummet by over 20 percent and resulted in the resignation of continental Europe chief Corrado Sciolla.
BT Italia currently has around 50,000 business customers and access to a 17,000 km fibre-optic network as well as a 15 percent share of the enterprise fixed data market.
