Chile creates independent telecoms watchdog

Chile's Chamber of Deputies has approved the creation of the Superintendence of Telecommunications. The Superintendence of Telecommunications will function as a separate, independent body, alongside the existing regulator Subtel, Emol reports.

The Superintendence will serve as a controlling agency, mainly responsible for verifying that telecoms operators comply with the existing laws and regulations governing the sector. Subtel would retain its rulemaking powers, while the Superintendency becomes responsible for setting regulated tariffs. The Superintendency will not have powers in the TV services market, and will not be able to modify or grant licenses for provision of telecoms services.

The project related to the creation of the Superintendence of Telecommunications will now be reviewed by the Senate before getting final approval.
