Chinese messaging service Weibo reports it has received a public notice issued from the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of the People's Republic of China (SAPPRFT), stating that the SAPPRFT had recently requested the local competent authorities to take measures to suspend several companies' video and audio services due to their lacking an internet audio/video program transmission license and posting of certain commentary programs with content in violation of government regulations on their sites. Weibo is named as one of these companies.
Weibo said it is communicating with the relevant government authorities to understand the scope of the notice. The company plans to fully cooperate with the relevant authorities. Weibo will also evaluate the impact of this notice on its operations and its administrative options.
News portal site iFeng and video streaming platform ACFUN were also ordered to halt streaming services as Beijing strengthens control over online content, the Financial Times reports. The companies lacked the necessary license to stream audio and visual content and were "not in line with national audiovisual regulations and propagating negative speech," according to an announcement by China’s media oversight body.
