Cisco buys Broadsoft for USD 1.9 billion
Cisco said it has agreed to acquire BroadSoft for USD 55 per share in cash, for a total of USD 1.9 billion net of cash. The transaction has been approved by the board of directors of each company. 

Cisco said the companies will together deliver a robust suite of collaboration capabilities across every market segment. The acquisition is expected to close in the first quarter of next year, subject to the usual closing conditions and regulatory review. 

Before completion, Cisco and BroadSoft will continue to operate as separate companies. After that, BroadSoft employees will join Cisco's Unified Communications Technology Group led by VP and GM Tom Puorro, under the Applications Group led by Rowan Trollope.

Cisco forecasts return to revenue growth

Cisco reported revenues of USD 12.1 billion for its fiscal first quarter to October, down 2 percent from a year earlier in line with its outlook. Net income rose 3 percent to USD 2.4 billion, and EPS was up 4 percent to USD 0.48, at the low end of its forecast range. For fiscal Q2, Cisco forecast a return to revenue growth, a first in two years.

Broadsoft widens loss despite higher revenues in Q3

Unified communications provider BroadSoft said third quarter revenues advanced 9 percent from the year before to USD 91.5 million, passing expectations. The company's net loss widened to USD 2.7 million from a loss the year earlier of 0.6 million, with the loss per share going to USD 0.09 from 0.02. The adjusted net profit was off to USD 12.4 million or USD 0.38 per diluted common share, from 12.7 million and 0.40 year-on-year.

Cisco adjusts product categories

Cisco, which recently announced its acquisition of BroadSoft for USD 1.9 billion, said it will start reporting its product and service revenues in five new categories from the first quarter of next year. These will be: Infrastructure Platforms, Applications, Security, Other Products, and Services. The company said the change better aligns its product categories with its evolving business model.
