Comcast announced the launch of a new IP media player called XiOne. Developed with its European subsidiary Sky, the compact box launches first in Italy and Germany and for Xfinity Flex customers in the US.
The box will make it possible to deliver video services to Sky customers over an internet connection, rather than its traditional satellite model. Xfinity Flex already offers a similar service in the US, allowing Comcast to expand beyond its cable footprint and provide new options for video services to broadband customers.
The XiOne features fast processing and increased memory, enabling swift switching and navigation in and out of apps, Comcast said. The device supports Wi-Fi 6, 4K UHD, HDR, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos and comes with a small voice remote designed with streamers in mind.
The XiOne is currently available in Italy and Germany to Sky Q customers and is beginning its roll-out to new Xfinity Flex customers. Comcast said it plans to make the device available across more channels and to its Xfinity X1 cable customers and syndication partners in the future.
