Deutsche Telekom plans 5G rollout in six German cities by year-end

Deutsche Telekom said it has started to roll out 5G and expects to have 300 antennas across six German cities by the end of this year. The cities include Berlin, Bonn, Darmstadt, Hamburg, Leipzig and Munich. In the next 18 months, the 20 largest cities in Germany will all be connected with 5G.

Telekom is installing 5G on the nearly three-quarters of antenna locations in Germany connected with optical fibre, said Dirk Wossner, board member at Deutsche Telekom and head of the German operations. The expansion of the LTE network also remains a major focus for Deutsche Telekom. It plans to build around 2,000 new mobile base stations this year and aims in particular to eliminate white spots in rural areas.

Deutsche Telekom has started to test a network of 150 5G antennas already in Berlin, Bonn and Darmstadt, Handelsblatt reports. The 5G services can be used by those around the test sites in a small environment. The offering is aimed “at those who really want to be there from the beginning," said Telekom Chief Technology Officer Claudia Nemat. The network will also operate in Hamburg, Leipzig and Munich by the end of 2019.

Unlimited 5G data plan

Telekom is also offering 5G devices and rate plans. The Samsung Galaxy S10 5G costs EUR 899.95 on the Magenta Mobil XL Special rate plan. Customers who trade in their old smartphone can receive a credit of up to EUR 200 on the new phone, and Deutsche Telekom is also offering an early adopter discount of EUR 100. The new rate plan offers unlimited calls, SMS and data for EUR 84.95 per month with automatic access to 5G when it comes available. That compares to Telekom's current offer of unlimited data over LTE at EUR 79.95 per month without a phone or EUR 99.95 per month with a top smartphone.

The German operator also offers the HTC 5G Hub, which works as a portable hotspot and can connect up to 20 devices with the 5G network. The HTC device costs EUR 555.55 on the Magenta Mobil Speedbox XL rate plan and is already available. This new rate plan includes unlimited data volume and costs EUR 74.95 per month.
