Deutsche Telekom to set up hybrid 5G campus network at Hanover exhibition ground

Deutsche Telekom will equip the exhibition centre of Deutsche Messe in Hanover with 5G in a network project with Siemens. The exhibition ground will become a 5G campus, after Deutsche Messe obtained ta licence to use local frequencies from the Federal Network Agency.

Deutsche Telekom will provide 5G coverage over an area of more than 1.4 million square meters. It will set up a so-called "dual-slice" campus network, with public and private elements. The network will be divided in a private part with 14 5G antennas outdoors and over 70 indoor antennas using frequencies in the 3.7-3.8 GHz range. Telekom will also supply Deutsche Messe's 5G site with a public 5G network to research and test applications for industries. For the public network, Telekom's own frequencies in the 3.6 GHz range will apply. This means that a total of 190 MHz of bandwidth is available for the exhibition centre.

Telekom will first set up the 5G networks in five halls and the outdoor area, including parking lots. In a second step, it will supply all 30 halls and the buildings of the exhibition grounds. Siemens will set up a network infrastructure that will remain permanently in the exhibition hall, also after the trade fairs take place. Deutsche Messe can operate the networks for commercial use.

The Lower Saxony Ministry of Digitization is funding the 5G project at the exhibition centre with over EUR 2.8 million. The state of Lower Saxony has designed a legal framework to fund 5G campus networks for research and industry applications. The strategy of the local government aims to develop a 5G ecosystem in the state.
