Digi asks Hungarian regulator to annul 5G tender results

The Digi Communications group called on the Hungarian telecommunications authority NMHH to annul the award of 5G spectrum licences to Vodafone Hungary, Telenor Hungary and Magyar Telekom. The company claims NMHH did not take into account court proceedings filed by Digi requesting the suspension of the 5G award. The lawsuit concerns Digi's exclusion from the 5G auction by the local telecom authority in September 2019.

Digi said the court is yet to issue a final verdict concerning the case. 

CEO Serghei Bulgac said the authority handled this tender by ignoring its legitimate requests in court. This contradicts first and foremost the mission of this institution, that of ensuring effective competition conditions for the welfare of consumers and users, the CEO said. 

The company decided to continue its legal action to challenge its exclusion from this auction. The Digi group considers that the authority drastically reduces the chances of consumers to purchase basic services at competitive prices by discouraging competition and blocking the access of a fourth mobile operator to the spectrum.

Hungarian court deems legal Digi's exclusion from 5G tender

A court in Hungary confirmed that the telecommunications authority NMHH acted lawfully in excluding the operator Digi from the 5G spectrum tender, NMHH announced. The Curia dismissed Digi's parent company's appeal and held, in accordance with the judgment of the Court of First Instance, that NMHH had taken a well-founded decision on legal grounds to exclude the company from bidding in the sale of 5G frequencies. The decision cannot be appealed.

Hungary's telecommunications authority NMHH said the Metropolitan Court ruled as lawful a NMHH decision that excluded Digi Hungary from the 5G spectrum auction. The court found that NMHH made the decision based on a lawful and correct interpretation of the law. The operator may appeal the court's decision.

Digi Hungary petition against exclusion from 5G auction backed by 80,000

Digi Hungary gathered over 80,000 signatures for its petition against its exclusion from the country's next 5G auction, according to local publication Hwsw.hu. The petition was launched at the end of September in an attempt to put pressure on the local telecom authority NMHH, which is conducting the spectrum sale. Digi's petition can be joined both online and in stores by providing a name, ID number or home address.

Digi Hungary to end mobile test service in December ahead of full launch

Digi Hungary said its Digi Mobil test service launched in May 2019 will close at the end of December, writes local publication Hwsw.hu. Existing customers will have 60 days to choose from the new tariff portfolio, and the fourth domestic mobile operator will start commercial operations from 2021.

Vodafone Hungary offers 5G in Budapest, partners Budapest University

Vodafone Hungary said it will bring 5G to close to 200 base stations in and around Budapest, making 5G available to customers nearly everywhere in the capital. Vodafone Hungary also signed a co-operation agreement with the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, under which the company will provide spectrum for the 5G Laboratory under construction at the university.

Digi Hungary starts petition against exclusion from 5G tender

Digi Hungary is trying to put pressure on local telecom authority NMHH by starting a petition over its exclusion from the 5G auction. The operator is collecting signatures from people who back its entrance in the 5G auction, according to local publication HWSW.hu. The company targets both its customers and the general public who support more competition, saying they can express their sympathy with the service provider by signing the petition on the Digi website and at sales points.

Digi Hungary criticises spectrum auction proposal

Digi Hungary said Hungary authority NMHH's preliminary proposal for the award of licences in the 900MHz and 1,800MHz bands incorporates several conditions that might be seen as obstacles to Digi's participation in the tender. The company stated that the conditions of a mobile frequency tender overall should be neutral, fair, compliant with EU legislation and practice, able to provide room for more competition on the market for the benefit of the customers.

Customers with a landline Digi service and registered address in the area covered by the mobile service can sign up to the new mobile provider, according to local publication Hwsw.hu.

Magyar Telekom to upgrade 40 stations around Lake Balaton by summer end

Magyar Telekom will upgrade another 40 stations to 5G around Lake Balaton by the end of summer as a high influx of tourists is expected there, writes local publication HWSW.hu. The 5G service will be launched at six base stations in six unspecified waterfront cities, so the company's network covering certain areas of Budapest, Zalaegerszeg and Budaors will cover the shores of Lake Balaton.

Digi Mobile service to reach another 20 settlements in April

Digi Hungary said its Digi Mobile service will be available in another 20 settlements by the middle of April. The total number of settlements at least partially covered by the Digi service has reached 550, according to local publication Hwsw.hu. The coverage is relatively good in Eastern Hungary, less so in Transdanubia, and especially thin in the Balaton region, where since last summer's start little development has been seen, the report said.
