Dish unites streaming, OTA TV on new AirTV Android box

US pay-TV provider Dish Network has unveiled a new TV box called AirTV that combines free-to-air channels with streaming content. Building on Dish's Sling TV service, which offers a bundle of cable channels over the internet, the Android-based AirTV also incorporates access to Netflix, YouTube and a range of other apps on the Google Play store. In addition, customers can add a TV adapter with antenna that gives them access to local free-to-air channels, for sports and news. 

The main box, developed by Technicolor, includes support for 4K streaming, dual-band Wi-Fi and a Bluetooth remote control with voice commands. Available at AirTV.net, AirTV Player with the optional OTA AirTV Adapter is available for USD 129.99. AirTV Player for streaming only costs USD 99.99, and the adapter can be added later for USD 39.99.

Dish's AirTV adds dual tuner to TV player

The dual-tuner adapter costs USD 29 or USD 119 as part of a bundle with the AirTV Player. It means users can watch one OTA channel while recording another, or else record two OTA channels simultaneously through AirTV Player's Local Channels DVR.

Dish offers new voice remote with all Hopper DVRs

Dish Network released a new voice remote that ships with all its Hopper DVRs. Upgraded with motion-activated backlighting and two customisable buttons, the remote interprets natural language to control navigation, search and content selection on compatible set-top boxes. New Dish customers will receive the remote with a Hopper at no extra cost, while existing customers can upgrade for USD 20. This is the second-generation of the voice remote DISH unveiled in July 2016.

M1 launches Mobile Sports bundle

Singapore operator M1 has introduced the M1 Mobile Sports bundle. Sports fans can now stream live EPL and NBA matches on the go with the M1 Mobile Sports bundle. For SGD 16.90 per month, the bundle offering enables sports fans to catch Eleven Sports Network content on their smart devices, without incurring data charges. Customers will also have access to a 2GB boost to their data bundle.

Dish to deliver Planet Earth series in 4K

Dish will broadcast live in 4K Ultra HD the natural history series, Planet Earth II. Narrated by Sir David Attenborough, the series will simulcast on BBC America, AMC and SundanceTV on 18 February. Subsequent episodes will air on BBCA every Saturday night. Dish is also offering an exclusive free preview of BBC America, from 14 February through 30 March, giving customers access to Planet Earth II in both 4K and HD at no extra cost.

AT&T launches OTT video streaming services

AT&T will begin offering three video streaming services, namely DirecTV Now, FreeView and Fullscreen at the end of this month. Comcast to offer access to Sling TV

Comcast announced it will start offering the online TV service Sling TV to its customers over the X1 platform. The cable operator said the companies are working to add Sling TV to X1 and will provide more details when the content is available to customers. Comcast said Sling TV brings a new range of multicultural programming to its offering, addressing a growing segment of the US population. Sling TV will cost the same on Comcast as over other platforms, and all Sling TV packages will be available.

US pay-TV providers lose 255,000 net video subs in Q3

Eleven largest pay-TV providers in the US, representing about 95 percent of the market, lost about 255,000 net video subscribers in Q3 2016, compared to a loss of about 210,000 subscribers in 3Q 2015, according to a study by Leichan Research (LRG). Dish loses 116,000 pay-TV customers in Q3

US pay-TV operator Dish Network lost a net 116,000 customers in the third quarter, from a loss the year before of 23,000, with the total reaching 13.643 million from 13.909 million. The figure includes subscribers to its OTT service Sling TV and the satellite service. Dish said it had 736,000 gross additions, compared with 751,000 gross additions the year earlier. The operator lost 20,000 net broadband subscribers in the quarter, bringing its broadband subscriber base to about 593,000.

Sling TV has over 600,000 subscribers - report

US pay TV company Dish Network has over 600,000 subscribers to its Sling TV streaming service, reports the Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed people briefed on the numbers. Dish has not disclosed subscriber figures for Sling TV since it was launched a year ago, other than an initial statement that it had 169,000 customers at end of March 2015. Sling TV CEO Roger Lynch said in a conference call with analysts on 18 March that the vast majority of customers are not currently pay TV subscribers.
