EE hits 500,000 4G customers, unveils new plans

EE said that over 500,000 customers have signed up for 4G mobile services in the seven months since launch. The UK operator has announced new plans for consumers and businesses, and confirmed the next phase of its 4G network roll-out.

The new plans launching over the summer include Shared 4GEE Plans, to allow customers to share mobile data plans across phones and tablets, or with other people; and Pay-As-You-Go Mobile Broadband, allowing customers to pay for internet access on their tablets and laptops without a long-term commitment. Pricing and availability for the PAYG mobile broadband will be announced in the coming weeks.

EE plans to roll out "double-speed" 4G in 10 cities within weeks, boosting headline speeds to 80 Mbps and more than doubling the current average speeds to 24-30 Mbps. Double-speed will initially launch in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester and Sheffield.

EE's 4G network will reach over 55 percent of the UK population by end-June, rising to 98 percent by end-2014. Throughout 2013, EE will continue to expand to major towns and cities across the UK, including Aberdeen, Bath, Bournemouth, Brighton, Cambridge, Ipswich, Middlesbrough, Northampton, Norwich, Poole, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Swansea and York. The next phase of its 4G roll-out will target major commuter routes, shopping centres and airport hubs, such as Gatwick airport which has recently switched on 4G for customers across its site.
