Elisa and NENT combine standalone streaming services in Finland

Elisa and Nordic Entertainment Group (NENT) have announced the combination of their streaming services in Finland. From 30 June, customers can obtain Elisa Viihde Aitio alongside Viaplay Films & Series output for one price from their current supplier. In autumn, the streaming services will be combined as Elisa Viihde Viaplay.

NENT said that from 01 August, the monthly price of both the Viaplay Films & Series package and Elisa Viihde Aitio will increase for existing customers to EUR 12.99 from EUR 9.99 and EUR 9.90 respectively. For new customers, the adjusted price will apply from 30 June. Viaplay’s Total package will still cost EUR 34.99 per month and will include Elisa Viihde Aitio and Viaplay Films & Series together with Viaplay’s sports content

Elisa will be responsible for the sales, marketing and customer support of the combined service, and NENT will manage the technology and analytics. Both parties will continue to invest in content for it.

NENT and Elisa said Elisa Viihde Viaplay will offer a wide selection of domestic and Nordic original productions, international films, classic series and children’s output. Elisa said is one of the largest producers of Finnish drama, with 20 original series published. His include the internationally distributed, award-winning serials ‘Arctic Circle’, ‘All the Sins’, ‘Shadow Lines’ and ‘Bullets’. Elisa will continue to focus strongly on quality domestic drama and comedy as well as Finnish feature films.

NENT will premiere 30 original productions on Viaplay in 2020 and Viaplay’s offering of international films, serials and children’s content continues to expand rapidly through NENT’s long-term relationships with major Hollywood, independent and in-house studios

NENT president and CEO Anders Jensen said has delivered a string of hit local drama formats and the Elisa Viihde Viaplay standalone streaming service will address the whole Finnish market and provide viewers with an even stronger and more diverse line-up.

Estonian operator Elisa is offering its customers the option to watch the video streaming service Viaplay from Nordic Entertainment Group (NENT). It is available via a subscription to Elisa Huub and Viaplay. The monthly subscription rate for the package is EUR 10.99 monthly, or Viaplay can also be subscribed to separately.

Elisa Q2 revenue rises 5%, adds 43,000 mobile subscribers

Elisa has reported a 5 percent rise in second quarter revenue thanks largely to the camLine acquisition, the Elisa Viihde Viaplay venture and growth in in mobile revenue. The operator added 36,700 post-paid and 6,000 pre-paid mobile subscribers during the period. It said the macroeconomic outlook in Finland has improved and it is leaving its full-year outlook unchanged.

Elisa uses 5G to live-stream skiing championship in conjunction with Kepit Systems

Finnish operator Elisa said it will use 5G technology to live-stream cross-country races from the FIS Junior World Ski Championships (JWSC) in Vuokatti from 08-14 February, in cooperation with Finnish software-based TV production provider Kepit Systems. Viewers in Finland can watch the races on Elisa Cable TV, and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is in charge of the international rights.

NENT gives up idea of US listing, moves ahead with SEK 3.5 bln share issue for expansion

Nordic Entertainment Group (NENT) said it has given up the idea of a secondary listing in the US but is still going ahead with its plan to raise more than SEK 3.5 billion in equity to fund its international expansion. It will hold an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on 25 January to vote on the issue of new Class B shares representing up to 20 percent of total shares, without applying shareholders' pre-emptive rights.

Elisa announces 2nd series of original sitcom 'Mother-in-Paw'

Finnish operator Elisa said that filming has recently begun of a second series of its popular original comedy 'Mother-in-Paw'. In the sitcom, the Pitkanen family adopts a stray dog and names it Paw, shortly after which mother Maria finds out to her horror that her recently deceased mother-in-law Anna has reincarnated in Paw's body. Only Maria is aware.

Elisa says filming starts on 2nd series of internationally successful 'Arctic Circle'

Finnish operator Elisa said that filming has just begun of a second series of its internationally successful original drama production 'Arctic Circle' ('Ivalo'). The new series will be available on Elisa Viihde Viaplay in late 2021 and there will be international cast members this time, who are yet to be announced.

NENT extends Nordic exclusive rights to NHL match broadcasts until 2026

Nordic Entertainment Group (NENT) has announced its extension of its exclusive agreement with the National Hockey League (NHL) to broadcast NHL games in the Nordic region until 2026. Up to 1,400 live NHL ice hockey games to be streamed on Viaplay every season, including the NHL European Game(s) of the Week live in European primetime, in Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark and Iceland.

Telia Finland launches 'C More TV' mobile streaming at below EUR 5 per month for subscribers

Telia Finland has announced a new subscription video-on-demand (SVoD) service at below EUR 5.00 per month, with three free trial months. It said a survey found that two out of three people in Finland are interested in low-cost entertainment. The new service called 'C More TV' has been devised by Telia with its MTV arm and will cost EUR 4.95 monthly for Telia subscribers, with no fixed term.

Disney+ reaches over 10% of Nordic households in first 2 weeks

Approximately 450,000 Swedish households are now paying for a subscription to Disney+, after the streaming service went live in Nordic countries on 15 September, according to consultancy Mediavision. It estimates that more than 10 percent of households in the Nordic region have a Disney+ subscription. Mediavision said its analysis shows that Disney+ has a top position in the regional SVoD market only two weeks after its launch.

Elisa says 50% of Finnish homes have smart TVs, Elisa Viihde viewing doubles in first 9 months

Elisa said 50 percent of Finnish homes now have a smart television set, and the number of people using its Elisa Viihde television package and VoD service doubled between January and September. The most popular screen size is 55 inches, which accounted for 47 percent of all smart TVs sold by Elisa in August. According to a poll by Prior Konsultointi of 1,352 people in March, one in five Finns is considering buying a smart set.

Elisa announces Finnish-Danish thriller 'Next of Kin' for new venture with Viaplay

Elisa Viihde said filming begins this week in greater Helsinki of an eight-episode Finnish-Danish original drama serial called 'Next of Kin'. It will air on the forthcoming Elisa Viihde Viaplay service. 'Next of Kin' is set in a near future in which protagonist Liv (Nika Savolainen) becomes the target of a chase after his DNA sample is stolen from a biobank.

NENT lifts Viaplay subscriber intake target to 700,000, aims to reach 3 mln total by year-end

Nordic Entertainment Group (NENT) has upgraded its Viaplay streaming service paying subscriber target again for the current year to 3 million by adding more than 700,000 in 2020. In June, NENT had lifted its full year intake target to 600,000 from 400,000. The new target represents year-on-year growth of over 30 percent, compared with 29 percent growth to nearly 2.72 million on 30 June.
