Ericsson signs 5-year deal to upgrade Wind Tre's core network

Ericsson has announced a contract to virtualise and upgrade the core network of Italian operator Wind Tre to virtualize as it evolves to 5G. Starting this quarter, the 5-year contract will see Ericsson deploy a virtualised core network and orchestration capabilities according to ETSI open source NFV Management and Orchestration (MANO) standards. The 5G-evolution upgrade will deliver increased reliability, thanks to cloud architecture and network slicing, said Ericsson, adding that it will also modernise and expand Wind Tre’s existing physical network to guarantee full interoperability with the new network.

In its statement, Ericsson added that the contract encompassed its virtual EPC, virtual IMS and virtual UDC (User Data Consolidation) products, which will be deployed on its Network Functions Virtualisation Infrastructure (NFVi) platform. Other solutions include Ericsson Orchestrator, the virtual infrastructure manager Ericsson Cloud Execution Environment based on OpenStack, Ericsson Cloud SDN and software-defined infrastructure based on Ericsson HDS 8000. The company will also be the prime system integrator and provide support services.

Wind Tre started operations in January 2017 following the merger of Veon's Wind and CK Hutchison's 3 Italia. It’s currently unifying the mobile network infrastructure of Wind and 3 Italia with a view to improving performance, coverage, quality of service and speed of access, while virtualising its core network in preparation for the evolution to 5G and IoT.
