Ericsson, Singtel deploy 5G NR standalone, dual-mode core network

Ericsson and Singtel have announced they are accelerating their 5G partnership in Singapore through the deployment of 5G technology enabled by 5G New Radio (NR) Standalone and dual-mode 5G core network products and services. The 5G network will operate on Singtel’s 3.5GHz and 28GHz spectrum bands, spanning outdoor and indoor 5G coverage. mmWave connectivity will also be deployed in hotspots across the city state.

Ericsson’s radio and core services will serve residents, enterprises, industry and government authorities in Singapore. According to Ericsson, 5G-enabled application use cases could include cloud gaming, immersive virtual reality/augmented reality, robot-human collaboration in real-time, autonomous transport, remote healthcare, precision smart manufacturing and smart-nation connectivity.

Singapore operator Singtel and Ericsson report they have reached download speeds of 5.4Gbps in 5G standalone (SA) New Radio-Dual Connectivity (NR-DC), by aggregating Singtel's spectrum holdings across mid-band spectrum in the 3.5GHz band and 28GHz mmWave frequencies. This milestone was achieved in a demo with Ericsson's 5G radio access network products and services and dual-mode 5G Core network services, as well as a test device from Qualcomm powered by its Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF System.

Singtel launches 5G service at VivoCity mall in Singapore

Singapore operator Singtel has expanded its 5G network coverage, bringing 5G services indoors at VivoCity, the largest mall in Singapore. Running on 3.5GHz spectrum and small cell radio dot technology, Singtel's 5G network will provide users with speeds of up to 1.2Gbps whether they are indoors or outdoors at VivoCity.

KT starts testing standalone 5G on commercial network

South Korean operator KT has started testing standalone 5G on its commercial network. Domestic mobile operators initially planned to commercially launch standalone 5G services in 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic deployed their rollout plans, Yonhap news agency reports. KT says its employees will take part in the standalone 5G tests at the company's major offices and in urban areas. These tests mark the final phase before the standalone version's commercial rollout, KT added.

Singapore operator Singtel has launched the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro on its 5G network. Singtel's 5G network uses 3.5GHz spectrum, in addition to existing 2100MHz to offer mobile speeds of more than 1.2Gbps on the iPhone 12 line-up, the company said.
