A new industry alliance has formed to support the development of low-power WANs for the Internet of Things (IoT). An information session hosted by the prospective founding members will be at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The alliance members intend to collaborate in order to drive the global success of the LoRa protocol (LoRaWAN) by sharing knowledge and experience to ensure interoperability between telecom operators. The founding members of the alliance are Actility, Cisco, Eolane, IBM, Kerlink, IMST, MultiTech, Sagemcom, Semtech and Microchip Technology, as well as telecom operators Bouygues Telecom, KPN, SingTel, Proximus, Swisscom and FastNet (part of Telkom South Africa).
The LoRa technology enables public or multi-tenant networks to connect multiple applications into the same network infrastructure, which will enable new applications for IoT, M2M, smart city, sensor networks and industrial automation applications. Telecom operators see the technology as complimentary to cellular networks for connecting low-power applications and battery-powered sensors. The alliance aims to ensure interoperability with existing systems.
