Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has called for new internet regulations to help companies like his keep harmful content off the internet. With Facebook struggling to keep up with calls to reform its policies, Zuckerberg called for a "a more active role for governments and regulators" to coordinate rules for the internet.
The CEO outlined four areas where more government intervention could help. These include agreeing standards for the removal of harmful content and measuring companies against those standards, new legislation on verifying political actors in advertising, a harmonised global data protection regime in line with the standards of the EU's GDPR, and a right to data portability under an agreed standard for online data transfer between services.
Zuckerberg said Facebook "has a responsibility to help address these issues" and he plans further talks with lawmakers on coming up with solutions. "By updating the rules for the internet, we can preserve what’s best about it — the freedom for people to express themselves and for entrepreneurs to build new things — while also protecting society from broader harms," he said.
