Facebook grows Q4 sales 51% on mobile expansion

Facebook reported another quarter of over 50 percent revenue growth in Q4, while also more than doubling net profit. The social network's revenue rose 51 percent year-on-year to USD 8.81 billion, and mobile increased to 84 percent of ad revenue from 80 percent a year ago. 

With operating costs rising a slower 21 percent, the margin improved to 52 percent from 44 percent a year ago. Net profit jumped to USD 3.57 billion or USD 1.21 per share from USD 1.56 billion or USD 0.54 per share in Q4 2015. 

The number of daily active users on Facebook - excluding its other properties such as WhatsApp and Instagram - reached 1.23 billion in December 2016, an increase of 18 percent from a year earlier. That included 1.15 billion users over mobile devices, up 23 percent. Monthly active users rose by 17 percent to 1.86 billion, of which 1.74 billion on mobile. 

Facebook invested USD 4.49 billion in capital equipment last year, up from USD 2.52 billion in 2015, and ended 2016 with total cash of USD 29.45 billion.
