FCC revokes China Unicom licence to operate in the US

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has revoked China Unicom’s authority to provide telecom services in the US. Under the adopted Order on Revocation, China Unicom Americas must discontinue all domestic and international services within 60 days. A similar order was released late last year for China Telecom.

The FCC said the order was taken to safeguard the nation’s telecom infrastructure from potential security threats. The commission note that China Unicom failed to dispel “serious concerns” in March 2021 and that it still demonstrates “a lack of candor, trustworthiness, and reliability,” eroding the baseline level of trust the FCC and other US government agencies require from telecom carriers.

The FCC added that no mitigation could address these “significant national security and law enforcement concerns.”
