A study by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency, Traficom, found that members of the public require more information about the environmental impact of IT equipment and services. The effects of energy consumption by internet services are clearly more difficult to understand than device lifecycle impact, it said. As many as 68 percent of consumers would change their use of internet services if they had more information.
Respondents were familiar with the environmental benefits of longer-term use and recycling of terminals such as smartphones, and of lower traffic as a result of remote meetings. There was lower understanding of the ecological effects of services and network technologies. About 60 percent did not know whether or not landline internet is a "greener" choice than mobile.
