Flipkart to launch video streaming service in India by September - report
Walmart’s Flipkart plans to launch a video streaming service in India. The service will be available for members of the Flipkart Plus loyalty program by September ahead of the peak Diwali shopping season, Bloomberg reports, citing unnamed people familiar with the plans. According to these sources, the video streaming service is currently in beta mode.

Initially, Flipkart has no plans to produce original content. Instead, the company will license content from Walt Disney Co. and local studios such as Balaji Telefilms, the same sources added. In-house content could be added later on, the sources also said. 

The Flipkart Plus video streaming service will be available free of charge, similar to its no-subscription fee loyalty program. Flipkart shoppers can become members by collecting 300 “super coins”, at a rate of 2 for every INR 100 (approximately USD 1.40) spent on the platform. Customers can then exchange these tokens for various items, ranging from flight tickets and food delivery to car rentals and music streaming subscriptions.

US-based retailer Walmart has completed its acquisition of a controlling stake in Indian e-commerce portal Flipkart in August 2018. Walmart holds 77 percent of the shares, while Flipkart co-founder Binny Bansal, Tencent, Tiger Global and Microsoft are the remaining shareholders.
