French associations bring battle against 5G to supreme court

Two French associations announced that they have launched an appeal with the country's supreme court (Conseil d'Etat) against the government's green light for roll-out of 5G networks. Environmental group Agir and Priartem, an organisation campaigning on electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS), are calling for an official assessment of the ecological impact and health risks associated with 5G, in application of the principle of precaution and EU regulation on consumer protection. The two NGOs are also inviting the public to sign a new petition demanding a temporary halt to 5G deployments in France.

French supreme court rejects demand from NGOs to halt 5G auction

France's supreme court (Conseil d'Etat) has published a first decision on the appeal launched by two French associations against the government's decrees setting in motion the country's 5G spectrum auction. As part of the ruling, the judge explained that there was no urgency to justify a suspension of the government's decrees and that the appeal case would be examined by the court before the summer.

French 5G tender moves to next step, bidding to start in April

French telecom regulator Arcep has announced that Bouygues Telecom, Free Mobile, Orange and SFR have submitted applications for the first phase of the 5G award process for 3.5 GHz spectrum. Candidates had been given until 25 February to file a tender package complying with Arcep's specifications.

The French government has been accused of disregarding the defence of jobs in the telecom sector with the legal texts published to pave the way for the country's 5G auction. Trade union CFE-CGC Orange has launched an appeal with the country's highest court (Conseil d'Etat) to revoke the government decree published at the end of December, as well as the related decision issued by telecom regulator Arcep. French health & safety agency to assess exposure to 5G radio frequencies

The French government has asked the country's health & safety agency ANSES to evaluate the presence of health risks associated with the exposure to electromagnetic fields, looking specifically at 5G radio frequencies. As a first step, an expert committee has reviewed the evidence already produced from external sources, gathering the findings in a preliminary report.

Electromagnetic radiation from 5G systems is well within EU maximum limits, according to research by the Telecom Agency of the Netherlands and the country's environmental health institute, RIVM. This is their first series of test, designed to build up more expertise in an area increasingly of concern to the general public but with little practical research yet.
