Global mobile phone sales fall 2.3% in Q2
Worldwide sales of mobile phones to end-users reached 419 million units in the second quarter of 2012, a decline of 2.3 percent from a year earlier, according to Gartner. Smartphone sales made up 36.7 percent of total mobile device sales and grew 42.7 percent from a year earlier to 153.7 million. Samsung was top ranked in worldwide mobile device sales with an estimated 90 million units sold and a market share of 21.6 percent, an increase from 16.3 percent a year earlier. Nokia came in second in mobile device sales with 83 million units sold and a market share of 19.9 percent, a decrease from 22.8 percent in the second quarter 2011. Apple ranked third in overall mobile device sales with 28.9 million units sold and a market share of 6.9 percent, an increase from 4.6 percent a year earlier. In the smartphone OS market, Android took the lead with an increase in market share from 43.4 percent in Q2 2011 to 64.1 percent this year. Apple ranked second and saw a slight market share increase of 0.6 percent year-over-year to 18.8 percent, but was down 3.7 percent points quarter-on-quarter.
