HMD Global is overhauling the Nokia smartphone range with three new series of devices. The company's new marketing plays on consumer concerns about security and durability with the tag line 'love it, trust it, keep it'. In addition, the company is launching its own MVNO called HMD Mobile, available first in the UK this month.
The company is releasing two models in each of the three new phone series. These are the X series for premium devices with the top features, the mid-range G series targeting the mass market, and the entry-level C series for first-time smartphone users or back-up phones.
The X and G series will continue with its promise of three years of monthly security updates, and the C series will come with at least two years of quarterly updates. The company also offers an extended three-year warranty on the X series, two years on the G series and a promise of tougher hardware durability tests on the C series so it's designed to last longer than the industry average.
Launching first in April is the Nokia G10, which comes with a triple rear camera and AI photo features for a price tag of EUR 139, and the Nokia C20 with a 6.5-inch HD+ display and Android Go for EUR 89. The similar C10 with Android Go, with a choice of 1 or 2 GB and up to 32 GB storage, will launch in June for an average EUR 75.
In May, the Nokia G20 priced at EUR 159 and X20 at EUR 349 will hit the market. The G20 offers 4 GB RAM and a choice of 64 or 128 GB storage, plus a 48-megapixel camera and Ozo surround audio. The X20 ramps up the camera to 64 megapixels on the back and 32 megapixels on the front, plus a Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 processor with 5G modem and Android 11 straight out of the box.
Both the X20 and X10 launching in June come with a 6.67-inch Full HD+ display, Zeiss Optics and advanced AI imaging features. The X10 at EUR 309 has slightly lower specs, with a 48-megapixel camera as well as an option for 3 GB rather than 4 GB RAM and 64 GB instead of 128 GB storage.
MVNO starts this month, to roll out worldwide
The MVNO HMD Mobile builds on the roaming service HMD Connect launched last year by the company and is designed to offer customers a simpler way to connect to services with value. It's designed so customers only pay for the features they use regularly, with no fixed-term subscriptions or premiums. This is part of HMD's ambition "to become the ultimate one-stop-shop for all your mobile needs", it said.
The new service launches in the UK at the end of this month, with a gradual global roll-out planned. Customers will be able to order the service online when they buy their phone and manage the service with a dedicated app. Bundles will start from GBP 6.50 per month for unlimited UK/EU calls and texts and 1GB data and go up to 25GB of data per month.
