Huawei opens Cyber Security Transparency Center in Brussels

Huawei has opened its new Cyber Security Transparency Center in Brussels, its latest step in opening up on the security of its products. The company said over 200 people attended the event, which included representatives of the EU, GSMA and telecom operators.

Located in the heart of the government and EU quarter in Brussels, the Cyber Security Transparency Centre will have three important functions, Huawei said. These are a showcase for Huawei's products and security practices, a platform for communicating with stakeholders on security and privacy policies, and a site where customers and partners can test and verify products.

Huawei has similar cybersecurity centres in the UK and Germany already, where it has opened up on the source code of its products and security practices across the company. The new centre comes in the face of criticism from the US and other countries that its equipment may serve as a 'back door' for the Chinese state, a claim Huawei has repeatedly denied.

Huawei's rotating CEO Ken Hu opened the centre and also met with the European Commission's vice president for the digital agenda, Andrus Ansip. The latter said they agreed that "understanding local security concerns, being open and transparent, and cooperating with countries and regulators would be preconditions for increasing trust in the context of 5G security". Ansip has previously said the EU needs to be concerned about the security risks of working with Chinese companies.
