Chinese technology company Huawei is planning to develop a derelict site in the village of Sawston, just outside Cambridge, into a new R&D facility developing chips for broadband networks, reports the Financial Times.
At a meeting with residents last week, company executives said the new facility would be operational by 2021 and would create up to 400 jobs. Huawei has agreed to buy a 550-acre site that used to belong to stationery business Spicers.
The company invited residents to 'name their price' for supporting the plans, saying it could finance a new medical centre or something else on an unused part of the site. Huawei said it could also eventually use the the facility to develop artificial intelligence (AI) software.
Huawei currently has around 120 employees in Cambridge and is looking to expand there as part of a 5-year GBP 3 billion UK investment programme announced in February 2018.
