Ikea accelerates smart home investment with dedicated unit

Home furnishings giant Ikea announced that it's setting up a dedicated smart home unit. The company has been developing smart home products since 2012 and now wants to invest more in the area through the new unit Ikea Home Smart.

The unit is located in Sweden, as part of the country operations there. Bjorn Block, head of the smart home unit, said the company needs to go beyond conventional home furnishing if it wants to continue to offer "products for a better life at home".

Ikea said it plans to "invest significantly" in smart home across the business, and this is the biggest new business it's established since the introduction of Children’s Ikea.

The company's smart home products to date include wireless charging, smart lighting and the recently added smart sound with Sonos products. It also has its own app for customers to control the products, which was rebranded in June as Ikea Home smart.
