Iliad appoints 29-year-old as Italian CEO

French operator Iliad has announced the appointment of 29-year-old Benedetto Levi as the CEO of its new Italian mobile operation. Turin-born Levi has an MBA from the ESCP Europe business school in Paris, where he founded a startup specialising in the sale of smartphone accessories. In 2015 he was named country manager of Italian startup Captain Train, later acquired by global train ticket retailer Trainline.

Levi’s appointment was announced on Iliad Italia’s recently-activated Iliad.it website, indicating the imminent launch of its mobile operation in Italy, where it will compete with TIM (Telecom Italia), Vodafone and Wind Tre as the country’s fourth network operator. Wind Tre currently leads the mobile market with a 31.5 percent share at end-September, slightly ahead of TIM and Vodafone.

Last year Iliad founder Xavier Niel revealed plans to reach 10 to 15 percent of the local mobile market as soon as possible with aggressive offers. The new operator will use assets acquired as a result of the merger of CK Hutchison and VimpelCom’s units in Italy, which are expected to cost Iliad in the region of EUR 450 million.
