IPCom patent declared invalid by EPO
The European Patent Office has revoked a patent held by Germany-based licensing group IPCom. Known as 100A, the patent was used in several infringement suits brought by IPCom against mobile phone makers. Most recently, it secured a ruling from a court in Duesseldorf banning certain Nokia products in Germany due to alleged infringement. Nokia said in a statement that the EPO's decision means that the court ruling will not affect Nokia products. The review by the EPO on the patent concerning UMTS network technology was requested by Nokia, HTC, Vodafone and other companies. IPCom told Dow Jones that it plans to appeal the decision.
