Nokia files patent suits against HTC, RIM, Viewsonic
Nokia is turning more aggressive in the mobile patent wars, filing claims in the US and Germany alleging that products from HTC, Research In Motion and Viewsonic infringe a number of its patents. The company filed a complaint to the US International Trade Commission against HTC, suits against HTC and Viewsonic in the Federal District Court of Delaware, US, against HTC and RIM in the Regional Court in Duesseldorf, Germany and against all three companies in the Regional Courts in Mannheim and Munich, Germany. In total, 45 Nokia patents are involved in one or more of the actions, covering hardware features such as dual-function antennas, power management and multimode radios, and software features such as application stores, multitasking, navigation, conversational message display, dynamic menus, data encryption and retrieval of email attachments on a mobile device. Nokia was last year successful in an ITC suit against Apple and also recently managed to have patents claimed by IPCom overturned after that company charged it with infringement. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop has said the company will step up its enforcement of intellectual property rights as part of efforts to shore up its revenues.
