KDDI, Okinawa Cellular launch 'au 5G' service in Japan
Japanese operators KDDI and Okinawa Cellular will launch their ‘au 5G’ service in some areas of 15 prefectures. The au 5G service is expected to expand to all major cities across Japan starting from summer this year. KDDI and Okinawa plans to expand the au 5G service to 10,000 stations by March 2021, and to more than 20,000 stations by March 2022.

KDDI will also provide a special offer on Augmented Experience at a discount to au Smart Pass Premium members so they will be able to access videos, movies, XR, cloud games as well as a range of real-life services.

Based on its 5G and 4G hybrid network, KDDI will offer unlimited options for rates, devices and services that create an open-ended Augment experience through collaborations with its partners and startups.

Japanese operator Rakuten has delayed the launch of its 5G service by three months because of supply chain issues generated by the COVID-19 crisis. KDDI announced it will launch 5G wireless services in the week of 23 March, the Japan Times writes. KDDI offers a monthly plan with unlimited data for JPY 8,650 (USD 77). It will also sell seven new models of 5G-compatible smartphones, including devices from ZTE, Xiaomi and Oppo.

Cisco has completed a proof of concept (PoC) with Japanese operator KDDI to build KDDI's 5G standalone (SA) network. Nokia, KDDI complete 5G core standalone network trial

Nokia and Japanese operator KDDI have completed a 5G core standalone (SA) network trial. The trial used Nokia's 5G AirGile cloud-native core service, and was conducted independently of previous generations' mobile network architecture. Nokia says its 5G AirGile cloud-native core can be rolled out in a traditional network environment or a cloud environment and is fully compliant with 3GPP Release 15 5G core functions.

Radisys, KDDI start 5G collaboration with RAN slicing use case demo

Radisys and KDDI Research have completed a demonstration of RAN slicing involving different traffic streams with different latency requirements on a single Radio Unit (RU) connected to multiple centralized units/ distributed units in a disaggregated network topology. To demonstrate 5G RAN slicing, Radisys created the entire configuration comprised of the 5G New Radio in Standalone mode operating in sub-6 GHz and the 5G core nodes, and it demonstrated services to ride on network slices.

Rakuten Mobile adds 20,000 participants to free trial, ahead of April commercial launch

Offering voice and data services free of charge to nearly 5,000 subscribers since launch, customer feedback through the Free Supporter Programme has allowed Rakuten Mobile to upgrade its service, as well as expand the mobile network service area. The operator also reports that progress is being made on the buildout of 4G base stations, with more than 3,000 currently on air, and the total number set to exceed the March 2020 target approved by the Ministry for Internal Affairs and Communications.
