KDDI launches 5G services with unlimited data offers

KDDI announced it will launch 5G wireless services in the week of 23 March, the Japan Times writes. KDDI offers a monthly plan with unlimited data for JPY 8,650 (USD 77). It will also sell seven new models of 5G-compatible smartphones, including devices from ZTE, Xiaomi and Oppo. 

From 26 March, the price of unlimited data use can drop to as low as JPY 3,460 for users of Au, KDDI's mobile service, if customers combine a number of promotions. Rivals NTT Docomo and SoftBank will start 5G services in the coming week as well.

KDDI’s 5G services will be available in 15 prefectures to start and will be expanded nationwide in the summer, it said. KDDI aims to install 10,000 base stations by the end of March 2021 and another 10,000 by the end of March 2022.

KDDI also offers plans that include streaming from Netflix and Apple Music. In addition, it plans to kick off a two-year campaign where customers will be able to enjoy 5G services for around the same price as 4G.

With an additional JPY 500, subscribers will be able to make calls of up to one hour per month.

NTT Docomo to sell 5G smartphones for JPY 50,000

Japanese operator NTT Docomo will launch a line of low-priced 5G smartphones by the end of this year. The move is designed to attract new subscribers, Nikkei reports, citing company CEO Kazuhiro Yoshizawa. The smartphones will be available for pricing ranging between JPY 50,000 (approximately USD 470) and JPY 80,000. Currently available 5G smartphones are avaialbe for prices of more than JPY 100,000.

Nokia, KDDI conduct PoC on fully virtualised cloud RAN

Nokia is working with Japanese mobile operator, KDDI, in a joint initiative aimed at delivering a fully cloudified RAN platform. The planned lab-based Proof of Concept (PoC) will use Nokia's AirScale All-in-Cloud BTS platform and enable KDDI to research how flexible, virtualised radio network technology can support the diversifying network performance requirements in the 5G era. Cisco powers Rakuten Mobile roaming with KDDI

Cisco announced another milestone in its engagement with Rakuten Mobile with the successful launch of an inter-network roaming service between Rakuten Mobile and KDDI mobile networks across Japan. The LTE roaming service, defined by 3GPP and based on the S10 signaling interface standard, is being used within Cisco's Virtual Ultra Packet Core to connect to mobility management entities (MMEs) between Rakuten Mobile and KDDI.

NTT Docomo to launch commercial 5G service on 25 March

Japanese operator NTT Docomo has announced it will commercially launch its 5G service on 25 March. At the time of launch, the service will achieve a maximum data rate of 3.4 Gbps, and in June the downlink will increase to a maximum 4.1 Gbps, Docomo said. Docomo's 5G coverage will initially encompass around 150 locations nationwide and then expand to all prefectures by June. More than 500 cities are expected to have access to Docomo's 5G service by March 2021.

SoftBank has announced it will launch 5G services on 27 March. This would make it Japan's first operator to launch 5G services on the local market, The Japan Times reports. SoftBank plans to charge an additional monthly fee of JPY 1,000 (approximately USD 9) for access to its 5G service. However, as a service launch promotion, customers will have free access to SoftBank's 5G service for the first 2 years, under a sales campaign that runs until August.
